Small Home Business Ideas

Here are some Small Home Business Ideas for Mums, like me, who want to work from home around their kids and don't want to return to the workforce.

Before I had my boys I always swore that I would not leave the workforce. That I was going to maintain my career and keep current in industry. But as soon as I had them there was no way that I could return to work. I wanted to be there for them when they needed me and be there for all their milestones. In the year 2000 there was not a lot of remote work or flexibility in the workplaces so I had to get creative.

Small home business ideas that can be done at anytime

So at that time my son was a baby and obviously that takes up a LOT of time! Anyone who thinks stay at home mums don't work are absolutely kidding themselves!!

I had to think about things that I could do when I had spare time and when he was sleeping.

I had a thing for numbers so bookkeeping was my first thing. It was something that I started gradually and could complete at anytime of the day (or night). I started with one business and then as he grew older and started to be able to occupy himself I took on other businesses.

But I am not a numbers person!!

I totally hear you! I understand that you are either a numbers or a words type of person.

Another small business idea that is exploding at the moment is writing content for businesses and websites. If you like writing and want to be able to work around a sleeping baby this is very big at the moment!

All you have to do is go to a website like Upwork, sign up for an account, do some quizzes, upload some samples of work and you are on your way! Perfect work from home business!

And talking about Upwork, if you are into design, graphics, IT support, there are hundreds of opportunities for those wanting to work from home.

Some other ideas that can be done from home if you have a bit more time and flexibility

What about minding other people's babies? If you enjoy looking after your own kids you could mind others at the same time for those mothers who don't want to stay at home. There are probably mum's that you have met in your mother's group that might need a trusted friend to take care of their babies when they are not there.

Do you like cooking? Or making cakes? Well then you can turn that hobby into a small home biz idea! You can bake and sell and earn the money before you know it!

What about being a personal trainer? If you are able to get your own kids minded and you love health and fitness personal training is an easy and cost effective way to start a small home based business.

Tutoring school students could be an any other option. I have a friend who tutors school students from her own home and she is still able to be available for her own child. It is also quite lucarative and there may be funding available for kids with special needs or disabilities.

Did you work as an administrative assistant before having kids? What about becoming a virtual assistant? There are a number of benefits for businesses looking to hire virtual assistants such as reduction of office equipment and space costs, it is usually contract so they don't may super and insurances, etc. You can work around the kids and without the office interruptions. This type of work is also available on Upwork.

Medical transcription is another ideas for a small home business. If you have experience in this area why not visit and talk to local doctors clinics to find out if they are looking for additional help in this area.
