How to start a home based business in 6 easy steps

To start a home based business, there are a number of easy steps that you can follow:

  1.  Choose the kind of business that you want to get into. If you are great at making things, like baking cakes or t-shirt printing, or if you are a certified programmer or a transcriber, it is a great idea to start a home based business.
  2. Assess how in demand your skills or services are. Be observant and find out if the people in your neighborhood are big cake lovers, or if you can find clients looking for a programmer through your network.
  3. Check out the finances. How much money do you have right now? How much of it needs to go to starting your home based business? How much do you expect to earn on the first month? Is it enough to cover all your operating expenses? This is where it is really beneficial to do a very basic cash flow projection to see if it will be worthwhile.
  4. Review the legal aspects of starting a home based business in your area. You will most probably need to register for a home based business license if you are having people visit your home regularly. If you do the majority of your work from home but don't have clients visit you might not have to. Check with your local council.
  5. If you get the go ahead from your council to start a home based business in your location, prepare a business plan to have a hard copy of the ideas, objectives, and other information that you have decided about your business. This will include finances, marketing opportunities, staffing requirements, and who your competitors are to determine your competitive advantage.
  6. And finally ... the 6th step ... you are ready to launch your home based business. Remember that this is an ongoing learning process and be open to anything new that comes your way.
